Description
The Flow Calibration Technician performs calibration, verification, troubleshooting, and repair of inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM & TE) used for liquid-flow measurement. The technician applies metrology principles, fluid-measurement fundamentals, mathematics, and measurement science to ensure accurate and traceable flow measurements. The technician operates liquid-flow calibration systems and reference standards, selects appropriate calibration methods and test points, evaluates measurement data and uncertainty, identifies out-of-tolerance conditions, and documents results in accordance with SCI quality-system and accreditation requirements.
Requirements
- Calibrate, verify, troubleshoot, and, when authorized, repair IM & TE used for liquid-flow measurement to ensure compliance with published specifications and applicable procedures.
- Maintain primary and/or intrinsic calibration standards.
- Maintain secondary and/or working calibration standards.
- Collect, compile, measure, summarize, and record data gathered during calibration.
- Analyze measurement data for identifying abnormalities trends and/or predicting future values.
- Identifying IM & TE out-of-tolerance conditions and perform corrective action via adjustments, component replacement, correction factors, etc.
- Identify and correct measurement errors, as applicable.
- Prepare calibration reports and certificates.
- Recommend IM & TE for use in measurement applications.
- Adapt existing calibration equipment, standards and techniques to accomplish unique measurements tasks for which they are not principally used.
- Train subordinates in calibration concepts and procedures.
- Perform lab housekeeping.
- Maintain laboratory recognition/accreditation.
- Provide technical advice to the other departments of the organization.
- Calibrate and repair IM & TE for liquid-flow measurement in a laboratory setting.
- Operate flow benches, pumps, reservoirs, reference/master flowmeters, valves, piping, pressure and temperature instrumentation, and associated data-acquisition equipment.
- Set up and operate liquid-flow calibration systems using appropriate hoses, tubing, fittings, adapters, seals, valves, and flow-control components.
- Perform zero checks, leak checks, stabilization, repeatability testing, and multiple flow-rate test points.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, manufacturer specifications, calibration procedures, reports, and work instructions to prioritize daily workflow and select appropriate flow test methods and ranges.
- Compare measurement uncertainties of a device to scope of accreditation.
- Author or revise calibration methods.
- Safely isolate, depressurize, drain, connect, and disconnect liquid-flow equipment and test systems in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Troubleshoot abnormal results to determine whether the cause is the device under test, reference standard, flow bench, pump, test connections, restrictions, leakage, or another part of the measurement system.
- Evaluate factors that affect flow measurement, including temperature, pressure, density, viscosity, entrained air, flow profile, piping configuration, pulsation, leakage, restriction, and stabilization time.
- Apply and convert common flow units, including GPM, LPM, mL/min, and other units required by customer specifications or procedures.
- Work with common liquid-flow devices such as turbine, positive-displacement, variable-area/rotameter, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, Coriolis, and other applicable flowmeters within laboratory capability.
- Minimum two years of experience in measurement and calibration; liquid-flow measurement experience is preferred.
- Civilian or military training with a working knowledge or demonstrated capacity to comprehend metrology or Military precision measurement equipment laboratory (PMEL) experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to read and write English.
- Ability to recognize problems through troubleshooting and determine solution.
- Ability to determine tools and equipment needed to complete a job.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening test.
- Must be able to pass a background pre-employment check.
It is SCI’s policy to require safe operations and practices from all employees and to ensure a safe working environment.
