Job Description

Do you have experience processing payroll for a large number of employees? Are you passionate about being a piece of the puzzle that helps the City of Chesapeake Employees thrive? If you answered yes to these questions, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

We are looking for a detail-oriented individual who will be processing the semi-monthly in-house payroll for approximately 3,500 employees utilizing an automated time and attendance system and integrated payroll system in the centralized Payroll Division of Finance. The selected candidate will apply in‑depth knowledge of payroll principles, including federal, state, and City laws and regulations, deductions, and benefits that affect the payroll processes.

Tasks
  • Communicates effectively, provides guidance, and resolves payroll‑related issues and questions timely.
  • Assists with testing and validating new payroll system enhancements and functions as required.
  • Assists with entering special pays such as bonuses, employee reimbursements, retroactive and underpayments.
  • Demonstrates ability to multi‑task, meet deadlines, and pays strong attention to detail.
  • Works independently and demonstrates good time management skills.
  • Responsible for direct deposit and retirement transmission files; verifies delivery of file and payment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Vocational / Educational Requirement
:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.

Experience Requirement
:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related full‑time equivalent experience.

Special Requirements
:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short‑term department needs and/or City‑wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• In‑house payroll processing experience. Large employer (>1,000) processing experience.

• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC).
