Summary

Position:
Psychology Technician – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN
6), Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, North Battlefield Campus. This role aligns with the Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) Program under Primary and Transitional Care Services. Responsibilities encompass clinical support, assessment, triage, psycho‑education, documentation, and coordination within a multidisciplinary team.

Base Pay Range

$62,639.00/yr - $81,436.00/yr

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the first line of care in the assigned clinic, providing clinical support 40%.
  • Conduct outreach efforts, collect information, and provide assessment and triage to vest veterans newly referred to PCMHI.
  • Discuss best disposition options with multidisciplinary team members and coordinate implementation of treatment recommendations.
  • Complete psychiatric and physical diagnostic questionnaires.
  • Maintain clinical records and documentation, ensuring regulatory compliance and Good Clinical Practices.
  • Maintain responsibility for the implementation of the Behavioral Health Laboratory (BHL), working under the guidance of the supervisor or team lead.
  • Monitor patients in PCMHI, run relevant reports, and maintain data.
  • Organize and assist in scheduling patient appointments.
  • Provide psychoeducation to veterans using standardized individual and group protocols.
  • Provide care management services to veterans, coordinating with multidisciplinary team members involved in the patient’s care.
  • Support LIPs’ interventions through methods such as telephone-based support services.
  • Encourage attention to health‑focused behaviors and treatment adherence.
  • Complete clinical reminders on patients.
  • Oversee daily activities of the assigned clinic and facilitate the flow of care.
  • Develop a working knowledge of various treatment modalities delivered by the clinical staff.
  • Conduct follow‑up interviews and ongoing monitoring of patients’ symptomatology using structured assessment instruments.
  • Gather information regarding treatment adherence and recognition of emergent needs.
  • Manage and coordinate referrals to specialty behavioral health services including MH and SA services.
  • Follow up with patients referred to other clinics or services to motivate attendance to the appointment or aid in stabilization and management of that patient before their appointment.
  • Assist with the preparation of workshop and group activities.
  • Ensure availability of patient education and other materials related to PCMHI work.
  • Assist patients in meeting basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and benefits.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date contact information about commonly used community resources.
  • Complete structured diagnostic and clinical assessments for veterans.
  • Perform psychological, neuropsychological, or psycho-physiological tests on veterans referred for examinations, including administration and scoring.
  • Provide timely summaries of relevant data collected within the assessment.
  • Demonstrate and use knowledge of medical terminology and diagnostic categories in the completion of psychological assessments.
  • Review assessments completed by others and obtain missing information from providers, veterans, and medical records.
  • Assist in training new employees—pre‑doctoral psychology interns and other trainees—in test administration, scoring, and using BHL for measurement‑based care.
  • Independently triage patients, identifying immediate needs.
  • Assess safety of patients with timely and appropriate hand‑off to licensed independent providers, providing an entry‑level suicide risk assessment.
  • Conduct patient interviews to assist in triaging veterans to appropriate licensed clinical providers on the assigned team.
  • Assist in determining appropriate level of care need for patients.
  • Refer to a variety of clinical options within the assigned team or throughout the medical center and local community.
  • Contact patients through written correspondence and telephone calls and conduct follow‑up interviews.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
