Social Worker (Psychotherapist BHIP Program)
Social Worker (Psychotherapist BHIP Program) role at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Location: Hampton, VA
Pay Range: $70,811.00/yr – $/yr
The Social Work Psychotherapist position is aligned with the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program/Outpatient Mental Health Services and provides psychotherapy services, intake, and crisis intervention within a team context.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship (non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited)
- Proficient in oral and written English
- Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited program
- Licensed or certified at the master’s level in a state; waiver possible for GS‑9 if at GS‑11 or higher
- Valid license or certification required for GS‑11 and above; unlicensed candidates must obtain within specified timelines
- Experience and KSAs as described below for GS‑9 and GS‑11 levels:
- Veteran‑centric approach to interventions and counseling
- Assessment of psychosocial functioning and formulation of treatment plans
- Implementation of evidence‑based treatment modalities for individuals, families, and groups
- Effective communication with clients, staff, and community agencies
- Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses and treatment procedures
- Collaboration within the BHIP team and development of program initiatives
- Complete psychosocial assessments and diagnostic interviews for veterans
- Interpret assessment data to identify treatment options
- Provide individual and group psychotherapies as part of the BHIP team
- Work with veterans experiencing frequent and severe crises, ensuring continuous professional psychological support
- Utilize medical and mental health diagnoses (including PTSD, mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders) and medication knowledge in treatment planning
- Contribute to program development, consultation, and interdisciplinary treatment planning
- Maintain therapeutic relationships with veterans, families, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics
- Document all interactions in the electronic health record using appropriate templates
- Provide case‑management services throughout the continuum of care
- Serve as liaison and consultant regarding community resources, VA benefits, and specialty programs
