Job Duties

Western State Hospital is hiring new Registered Nurses! The position offers a $7,500 sign‑on bonus to new hires entering state service, requiring a one‑year written agreement.

The bonus is available for Registered Nurse I who are new to DBHDS or have not worked for at least one year for the Department of Behavioral Health Developmental Services.

Schedule:

This position works a set 12‑hour shift on a two‑week rotating schedule. Employees work 36 hours one week and 48 hours the following week or vice versa. Available shifts are 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.

Competitive salaries: RN II starting pay from $79,572, increasing commensurately with experience, education, and credentials. Total compensation, including paid time off and benefits, begins at $120,408 for this role.

Competitive Shift Differentials:

  • 1st shift weekend: $5.50 per hour
  • 2nd shift weekday: $5.50 per hour; 2nd shift weekend/holidays: $6.00 per hour
  • 3rd shift weekday: $4.00 per hour; 3rd shift weekend/holidays: $7.00 per hour

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self‑determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: eight behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or substance use disorder.

We are a 250‑bed Joint Commission/CMS accredited hospital located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley within 30 minutes of major university towns. Our new wings are scheduled to open by the end of March, adding 56 beds to capacity.

DBHDS is seeking dedicated, experienced Registered Nurse Professionals. A Registered Nurse II is responsible for providing advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, as well as nursing standards and regulations. Registered Nurses also safely implement the use of Seclusion/Restraints, including knowledge of physical/emotional risk factors of the patients served at the facility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff. Effective communication (written, verbal and sign).
  • Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
  • Ability to work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24‑hour, 7 day per week psychiatric hospital; may mean working a 16‑hour shift if and when necessary.
  • Complete all annual competency training to include TOVA III with physical restraints.
  • Complete and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of recovery/trauma informed care.
Additional Considerations

Bachelor’s and Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or higher education.

Psych Nursing experience.

Veteran or Veteran Spouse.

Bilingual in Spanish.
