Job SummaryThe Pump Mechanic is responsible for the disassembly, mechanical inspection, troubleshooting, and re‑assembly of all types, sizes, and configurations of pumps and blowers including Submersible Pumps, Close‑Coupled Pumps, End Suction Radial Pumps, Vertical Turbine Pumps, Axial Split Case Pumps, and Centrifugal Pumps/Blowers. This position reports directly to the shop foreman/assistant foreman and has no supervisory responsibilities.
Job Requirements- High School Diploma or Certificate from applicable trade/technical school and 5+ years in the rotating machinery industry. Qualified individuals with 10+ years of hands‑on experience in lieu of trade school certification will be considered.
- Basic 3‑phase electrical knowledge and familiarity with standard electrical testing equipment, to include megohmmeters, multimeters, ammeters, winding resistance meters, Low/High Voltage Test Panels, etc. (Will train qualified candidates on electrical parameters if necessary).
- Hands‑on experience with vertical turbine pumps, including installation, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Strong working knowledge of vertical turbine pump design, components, and performance characteristics.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and hydraulic issues specific to vertical turbine systems.
- Proficiency with typical mechanical measuring equipment:
Inside/Outside Micrometers, vernier calipers, depth gauges, steel rulers, etc. - Accurately read, understand, and interpret pump technical manuals, component drawings and sketches; follow industry standards and customer specifications.
- Clear analytical problem‑solving skills.
- Physical ability to safely operate equipment, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and stand/stoop/kneel for long periods.
- Flexible work schedule, willing to work overtime and 24/7 on‑call shifts.
- Disassemble, troubleshoot, and reassemble motor‑driven pumps and blowers.
- Clean and prepare mechanical/electrical components for inspection using shop equipment.
- Examine parts for defects such as eccentricities, rubs, wear, excessive damage.
- Perform detailed mechanical and visual component inspections; document "As‑Found" data.
- Recommend disposition on company job cards and customer spec sheets.
- Service calls for emergency breakdowns if necessary.
- Safely oversee lifting/rigging of equipment up to 25 tons.
- Lead and mentor less experienced mechanics throughout repair phases.
- Balance rotating assemblies to an industry standard of 4 W/N.
- Perform hydrostatic pressure testing on refurbished pumps before shipment.
- Perform criteria acceptance testing on close‑coupled pump motors, submersible pump motors, etc.
- Provide own tools and basic measuring equipment; large specialty tooling and electrical testing equipment is provided by the company.
