Summary

Typical duties include sorting donated textiles for resale in the retail outlet, meeting a production standard of 100-150 garments processed in an hour. Workers may also hang and tag merchandise, complete customer purchases, and perform various customer‑service duties. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Store Manager.

Special Requirements

Regular weekend (Saturday, Sunday), holiday, and evening hours customary to the retail trade are expected. Retail Material Sorters may be cross‑trained to perform duties of a Janitor, Retail Material Handler, and Sales Associate based on business necessity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sorting Textiles
    • Inspect each donated item, selecting only quality garments that are unused or gently used.
    • Identify and discard items that fail quality standards (stains, tears, missing zippers, etc.).
    • Place sorted items in appropriate bins for hanging (Men’s, Women’s, Children’s, Shoes, Accessories).
    • Set aside items with uncertain quality for supervisor review.
    • Hang sorted garments on “Z” rack following agency standards.
    • Meet with supervisor regularly to review quality, quantity, style, and value requirements.
  • Tag and Price Merchandise
    • Tag color fasteners on merchandise following the color rotation schedule.
    • Price merchandise according to established pricing guidelines.
  • Customer Service / Sales
    • Receive donated merchandise from customers and issue receipts.
    • Assist customers in locating requested merchandise for purchase.
    • Answer customer questions regarding location, price, and use of merchandise.
    • Accept purchases at the cash register, ring in individual transactions, calculate sales discounts and tax, and provide final receipts.
  • Material Handling
    • Help unload truck as required and sort/grade newly arrived goods.
    • Stock shelves, counters, or tables with merchandise.
    • Clean shelves, counters, and tables.
    • Prepare inventory of stock as required.
  • Other Duties
    • Assist at designated retail outlets to sort, price, set up displays, and perform other retail store duties.
    • Perform other related essential duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
  • Education and/or Experience
    • High school diploma or GED preferred (not required).
    • One to three months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Students under 18 may be hired for part‑time positions but cannot operate hazardous equipment and must follow CT DOL regulations for minors.
  • Language Skills – Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; speak effectively with customers, clients, and colleagues.
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two‑digit numbers using U.S. currency units.
  • Reasoning Ability – Apply common sense to carry out simple one or two‑step instructions with few variables.
  • Physical Demands – Stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, and hear frequently; occasionally climb or balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally; repetitive motion during sorting, hanging, and ticketing.
  • Protective Equipment – Wear protective eyewear and gloves when preparing cleaning solutions or operating the floor cleaning machine; use latex gloves for sorting credentials.
  • Work Environment – Wet or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; electrical shock risk; moderate noise level typical of busy retail environment.
