Applications are invited for one of our two Royal College of Surgeons accredited Bariatric Clinical Fellowships. Phoenix Health was foundedby Prof David Kerrigan, Past-President of BOMSS and the fellowship programme isin its 18th year. The training is delivered by a team of 4 bariatricsurgeons led by Mr Shafiq Javed, a senior bariatric surgeon with over 25-year experience in performing complex primary & revisional bariatric surgery.
Mainduties of the job
Fellows are responsible for day-to-dayward management and outpatient care of patients. You will receive training in all aspects of aholistic bariatric surgery service (including MDT, outpatients and hands-onlaparoscopic training) and will be expected to take part in a bariatric on-callrota.
Thepost-holder will be exposed to a wide range of bariatric procedures, includinglaparoscopic gastric bypass (RYGB and OAGB), sleeve gastrectomy, DS/SADIS, and complexrevisional surgery.
We expect that after completing a12-month Fellowship, candidates will be able to independently perform gastricband removal, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries.
Fellows will be encouraged to contribute to our active clinical research programme and receive mentoring in clinical research methodology.
About usWe currently perform over 50 bariatric procedures per month referred through our supra-regional NHS contract and the self-funding route.
The Phoenix Fellowship programme has a solid reputation for providing excellent, comprehensive training in all aspects of bariatric surgery and opportunities for clinical research, with recent Fellows being appointed directly from the Fellowship to Upper GI Consultant posts in major Teaching Hospitals.
Job responsibilitiesClinical Activities
Inpatients Care
- Assisting in theatre sessions
- Inpatient care including conducting daily wardrounds and supporting RMO with any clinical enquiries related to patient care.
Out of Hours Cover
- Covering weekday out-of-hour patients emergencycalls and enquiries.
- Weekend oncall (currently 1 in
7) - Conducting follow up clinics for NHS patients
- Conducting clinics for new NHS patients
Answering Clinical Enquiries(in-hours)
- Assist with medical enquiries at the office (thesemight be passed from the Specialist Bariatric Nurses or the admin team)
- Liaise with other hospitals teams when patients admitted into NHS Facilities and keep updates of patients care there
Note:
The consultant surgeon holds the ultimate responsibility for the patients care. Whenever the Fellow feels that an enquiry needs the attention of the consultant surgeon, they should elevate the matter directly to the consultant surgeon as needed.
Admin
- Keep a record of patients discharges and HDU stay
- Keep a record of M&M events and present thedata in the regular M&M meetings.
- Blood tests reviewing, actioning and letters
- Help the management team in conducting clinical audits related to patient care.
- Full GMC Registration
- Peri-CCT level in General Surgery (or equivalent)
- Good laparoscopic surgery skills with previous experience in laparoscopic fundoplication and/or intra-corporeal suturing
- Meticulous clinical standards and an excellent work ethic

- Possession of GMC and appropriate UK Visa registration are mandatory at the time of application, as are excellent English language skills.
