Lecturer in Law (Civil Justice and Practice)

0.2 FTE | Fixed-Term until August 2027

The University of Chester is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and professionally qualified legal practitioner or academic to join Chester Law School as a Lecturer in Law (0.2 FTE) on a 9-month fixed-term contract.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate legal education provision, particularly within our Civil Justice and Practice offering. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise and practice experience in the following areas:

  • Child and Family Law
  • Private Client practice, including Wills and Probate, Estate Administration, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and Court of Protection matters
  • Court Advocacy
About Chester Law School

Established in 2005, Chester Law School has built a strong reputation for student-focused legal education and professional preparation. The School supports approximately 350 students annually across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and is committed to delivering an outstanding student experience.

The School has a growing research community with expertise spanning social and criminal justice, family law, legal education, medical law, sports law, public and private international law, social welfare law, and equality and diversity. The Role

Working closely with colleagues across the School, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching through lectures, seminars and tutorials.
  • Contribute to modules within Civil Justice and Practice.
  • Design engaging learning materials and assessments.
  • Support students academically and pastorally, including acting as a Personal Academic Tutor.
  • Undertake marking and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and module leadership activities as required.
  • Engage with scholarly activity and maintain current subject knowledge and professional expertise.
  • Participate in School and University activities that support student success and academic excellence.

Given the part-time nature of the role (0.2 FTE), we particularly welcome applications from candidates wishing to combine academic teaching with ongoing professional practice.

About You

You will have:

Essential Qualifications
  • A Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, Fellowship of Advance HE, or a willingness to achieve this within an agreed timescale.
  • Expertise in teaching and/or practising within relevant subject areas.
  • Experience of legal practice in Child and Family Law.
  • Experience of court advocacy.
  • Previous teaching experience within Higher Education.
  • Evidence of maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge and professional practice expertise.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support and develop students academically and pastorally.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Effective IT and digital learning skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Understanding of contemporary developments in legal education and professional training.
