OverviewThe phlebotomy team provides essential services both within the Trust and the wider health care community. This post includes working within The Countess of Chester Hospital on inpatient wards, outpatient services and clinic settings. We also provide services at the 1829 Building located on The Countess of Chester Hospital site for GP bloods and off‑site locations that include a GP Phlebotomy Hub in Ellesmere Port and ward/outpatient services in Ellesmere Port Hospital.
This role includes working at all of the listed locations.
The Phlebotomy team covers weekend duties on a rotational basis; therefore flexibility of the successful candidate is essential.
Responsibilities- Ensure that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirm their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
- Collect samples in accordance with training and procedures.
- Accurately, legibly label all samples to confirm patient identity.
- Check patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirm with patient whenever possible.
- Record collection of blood sample via electronic method.
- Ensure that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
- Report anomalies or incidents to a senior member of staff and via the Datix incident reporting system.
- Liaise with laboratory staff.
- The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
- Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
- Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System. Due to its location on the border with North Wales, the Trust also works closely with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust treats patients from England and some parts of Wales. During 2024/2025, there were approximately 643,000 patient attendances (inpatient, A&E, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery.
