Application Support Engineer

12 months rolling contract initially
Daily rate: £300 Inside umbrella.
Our Operations team is looking for a skilled Application Support Engineer to support and maintain real-time communication and automation applications. These applications are Java-based and run on Linux environments.
We're seeking professionals with strong experience in Linux administration, SQL databases, and automation scripting, who can troubleshoot issues, maintain system stability, and support critical business applications.
Key Responsibilities
Support, maintain, and troubleshoot Java-based applications hosted on Linux servers
Develop, enhance, and maintain automation scripts using Python and Power Shell
Install, configure, and deploy software applications
Monitor system performance and investigate production issues
Perform application deployments, patching, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery activities
Create and maintain technical documentation
Monitor and analyse system and application logs
Work closely with infrastructure teams, including Database, Network, and Storage teams, to resolve incidents
Manage incidents through the ticketing system, ensuring timely updates and resolution
Escalate issues to relevant internal teams and third-party vendors when required
Carry out regular health checks, Splunk monitoring, and operational housekeeping tasks
Participate in an on-call support rota
Provide clear communication and updates to stakeholders and leadership teams
Required Skills
Strong experience supporting Java applications in production environments
Solid Linux administration and troubleshooting skills
Strong SQL and database query-writing skills
Experience with automation scripting using Python and/or Power Shell
Experience with incident management, ticketing systems, and end-user support
Ability to analyse issues, assess business impact, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Familiarity with Splunk monitoring and operational support activities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for reporting and data analysis
Desired Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work effectively with both technical and business users
Experience contributing to process improvements and operational efficiency initiatives
Additional scripting or automation knowledge would be beneficial
Education & Certifications (Preferred)
Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Relevant certifications in Linux, Java, SQL, Python, or Power Shell are advantageous
