Protein Design Data Scientist Postdoc

Protein Design Data Scientist – Postdoctoral Position (Data Scientist VS 1.1)

Bayer is looking for a highly creative and motivated data scientist with expertise in deep learning and protein design to join our team in St. Louis, MO. The candidate will join a cross‑divisional, global team to generate innovative machine learning solutions to better understand biomolecules and product ionize solutions into discovery pipelines in the Plant Biotechnology Group.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fine‑tuning and running deep learning models involved in protein analytics, while advising on a variety of external and internal collaborations focused on generating novel datasets, analytical approaches, and product development. The individual will also have knowledge on traditional molecular mechanics approaches to computational protein design and protein structure analysis.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Be an active member of a highly interdisciplinary and cross‑organizational team aimed at using AI to develop novel biotech products.
  • Stay current with fast‑paced innovation in AI applied to protein analytics and design.
  • Collaborate and consult with technical and non‑technical stakeholders on external collaborations in the protein space.
  • Conceive, execute, and evaluate models and experiments; interpret results and present them to a broad range of stakeholders and leadership.
  • Help other researchers use AI in their daily discovery activities.
  • Work in close collaboration with peers located in our Protein Sciences team and other members of the Data Science community.
  • Strengthen external visibility and scientific excellence through publishing, open source code, and engaging in the scientific community.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD and applied experience in at least one of the following areas:
    Computational Biology, Computer Science, Computational Chemistry, or related fields.
  • Demonstrates intermediate proficiency in computational skills and level of experience building data models using R or Python.
  • Strong proficiency in leveraging deep learning models for prediction involving biological sequence—to include comprehension of theory, modeling/identification strategies and limitations and pitfalls.
  • Experience in successful delivery of valuable analysis through application of domain knowledge; evidence of ability to strong business acumen.
  • Strong communication competencies to include presentations and delivery of complex quantitative analyses in a clear, concise and actionable manner to extended team and small groups of key stakeholders.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $90,000-$140,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or incentive compensation (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
