Job SummaryThe appointment is for a Locum Consultant General Surgeon within our friendly and well‑established Surgical Specialties Division at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. The role will support the provision of upper gastrointestinal surgery and develop laparoscopic surgery for benign upper GI diseases, including complex laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair. Responsibilities include developing emergency services, providing surgical ambulatory care, performing emergency Upper GI surgery (including hot gall bladder lists), supporting the general on‑call rota, providing regular gastroscopy lists and participating in emergency care.

Key Responsibilities- Provide emergency upper gastrointestinal surgery, including hot gall bladder lists.
- Perform and refine laparoscopic surgery for benign upper GI diseases, including complex hiatal hernia repair.
- Support general on‑call rota with surgical and gastroenterology input.
- Deliver regular gastroscopy lists.
- Develop and implement surgical ambulatory care pathways.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop new patient care pathways.
- Participate in audit, clinical supervision and professional development activities.
- FRCS.
- Full registration with the GMC, licence to practise.
- Broad clinical experience in emergency general surgery (acute laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bile duct exploration).
- Experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery.
- Clinical supervision experience/skills.
- Quality / clinical audit experience.
- Participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in laparoscopic procedures.
- Proficiency in endoscopic investigations and interventions.
- Experience of using an online patient record system such as Systm One.
- Experience managing complex hiatal hernia and motility disorders, including laparoscopic interventions.
- Experience in laparoscopic exploration of bile ducts.
- Experience in complex hiatal hernia repairs (both laparoscopic and open).
- Ability to undertake training/mentoring of clinical staff and enthusiasm for education.
- Leadership skills.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum.
Contract:
Fixed term, 12 months.

Full‑time.
