Year 4 SEND Teaching Assistant – Chesterfield

This role is centred on supporting pupils in Year 4 who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), helping them to access learning, build confidence and develop independence within a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the class teacher and SENDCo to ensure that pupils receive the personalised support they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

The Year 4 SEND Teaching Assistant will play a key role in the daily life of the classroom. They will provide tailored one-to-one and small group support, adapting activities and resources so that pupils can fully engage with the curriculum. This includes helping children understand instructions, break tasks into manageable steps and develop strategies that support their learning style. A strong emphasis will be placed on encouraging independence, ensuring pupils feel supported while gradually building their confidence and self-reliance.

The role involves supporting the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and behaviour support strategies. The teaching assistant will help monitor pupils’ progress, record observations and share feedback with the class teacher and SENDCo to inform future planning. They will use a range of supportive approaches such as visual timetables, structured routines and sensory strategies to help pupils feel secure and ready to learn.

Supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour is a vital aspect of the position. The teaching assistant will model positive relationships, help pupils develop social skills and provide reassurance during challenging moments. They may support pupils during transitions, break times and wider school activities to ensure consistency and continuity throughout the school day. Where required, the role may also include assisting with personal care, with appropriate training provided.

Working collaboratively is essential. The teaching assistant will be part of a wider team that includes teachers, the SENDCo, senior leaders and external professionals. They will contribute to planning and review meetings and help maintain clear communication with families when appropriate. A commitment to ongoing professional development and training is expected to ensure best practice in supporting pupils with SEND.
