Water Quality & Environmental Compliance Program Manager

Primary Role

Missouri American Water is seeking a full-time Water Quality & Environmental Compliance Program Manager to join our team in Chesterfield, MO. This lab-based role is essential in ensuring our treatment processes meet or exceed compliance standards. Responsibilities include participating in QA/QC activities, maintaining lab inventory, performing sampling, and supporting production efforts.

Our ideal candidate will be highly organized, a self‑starter, and possess technical knowledge and experience in a lab environment.

The Program Manager will organize advanced environmental management and water quality functions, maintain lab certifications, implement compliance programs, assist in resolving treatment issues, and investigate water quality complaints.

• Manage monitoring and reporting programs to ensure compliance with federal and state water quality and environmental regulations and company standards for assigned facilities.
• Conduct advanced sampling and/or analysis and special projects (50%).
• Obtain, prepare, file and maintain all regulatory reports and records.
• Manage required permits and make necessary modifications and renewals.
• Participate in internal and external audits and represent American Water to regulators and customers.
• Identify potential issues and problems, initiate responsive actions, and mitigate environmental violations (10%).
• Supervise, monitor, and calibrate analyzers/equipment to ensure performance and accuracy standards are maintained (10%).
• Conduct advanced projects and prepare reports as needed (5%).
• Investigate and respond to escalated water quality complaints or concerns.
• Plan, prepare, and control the portion of the financial plan related to responsibilities (5%).

• Knowledge of federal and state environmental standards and regulations and current environmental legislation.
• Regulatory knowledge of proper lab analytical testing methods.
• Understanding of water and/or wastewater treatment principles and ability to troubleshoot systems.

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in water, wastewater, and laboratory operations.

• Local and regional travel.
• Rare overnight travel may be required.

• Full‑time, on‑site.
• Monday–Friday, 8am–4:30pm.
• On‑call responsibility as needed.
