Job Description

As a Residential Support Worker (Waking Nights) you will provide emotional and practical support to young people during the overnight shift, ensuring a calm, secure environment, supporting safeguarding procedures, and managing behaviours.

After the overnight shift, you will help prepare the home for the day, ensuring safety, order, and readiness for the daytime team.

You will work closely with other professionals to implement individual care plans, support evening and morning routines, promote independence and well‑being, and keep accurate shift records.

Staffing and Shift Details

Shift: 9:30pm to 7:30am (a waking night role).

Responsibilities
  • Provide a safe, calm, and supportive environment throughout the night
  • Support care planning, including assessing needs, reviewing progress, and managing risk
  • Work with the wider team and other professionals, share information, and contribute to reports
  • Attend meetings such as reviews and work alongside professionals involved in each young person’s care
  • Take responsibility on shift to help ensure a safe, high‑quality service
  • Support and guide colleagues where appropriate, following policies and procedures
  • Lead by example in day‑to‑day practice and maintain high standards of care
  • Help deliver consistent, round‑the‑clock care in line with regulation
Qualifications and Experience
  • Possess a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or recognised equivalent) or be prepared to complete this within 2 years of employment
  • Experience working in a care setting and developing positive relationships through trust
  • Apply a range of techniques to coordinate and communicate with service users and their families
  • Have a solution‑focused approach to address problems individually and in a team setting
  • Show flexibility to work different shift patterns to support the service and maintain a fair rota
  • Demonstrate emotional resilience to respond to the challenging nature of the role
