R-4604## Current HHMI Employees, to apply via your Workday account.
HHMI is focused on supporting and moving science forward in a variety of different ways ranging from conducting basic biomedical research, empowering educators, inspiring students, developing the next generation of scientists – even stretching into film and media production. Our Headquarters is in the greater Washington, DC metro area and is home to over 300 employees with expertise in investments, communications, digital production, biomedical sciences, and everything in between.
The work housed here supports and augments the groundbreaking research conducted in HHMI labs across the nation. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working here are making a difference.
AI is central to how HHMI works on both sides of that line. Through AI@HHMI, we are investing in artificial intelligence as a tool for biomedical discovery in the labs we support. Through Everyday AI, we are changing how the Institute itself runs: every employee has access to Claude Enterprise, and the Everyday AI Accelerator exists to move AI out of pilots and into daily work.
We want both efforts to move faster, and we want people who can build.
We are bringing on a small cohort of AI Fellows to work directly with the President and the Chief Operating Officer. The job has two halves. Fellows will develop products and tools that ship and get used, and they will help HHMI's leaders understand where AI is going and what it means for us. They will build, test, and advise, and we expect to learn from them.
Fellows leave with two years of work that shipped inside a $29 billion institution, a direct line to its senior leaders, and a cohort of peers who did the same.
** What you will do
*** Develop and ship products and tools people actually use: internal applications, agent workflows, and automations for teams in Finance, People & Culture, Technology & Systems Management, Facilities, Campus Operations, and Communications.
* Pressure-test the AI use cases teams have already proposed, and find the ones with the biggest payoff that no one has proposed yet.
* Sit with staff, learn how the work actually gets done, and help them redesign it around AI rather than bolting AI onto the old process.
* Advise the President and the COO on trends in frontier models, agents, and applied AI, and what each one means for HHMI's science and its operations.
* Translate technical concepts into plain, practical guidance for leaders who are not technical.
** Who we are looking for
*** You have built real things with LLMs, not only prompted them. You have shipped at least one applied AI project or prototype that someone else used.
* You know your way around model APIs, embeddings, agent and orchestration frameworks, and evaluation. Fine-tuning experience is a plus.
* You think in systems. You can see how a workflow, a data source, and a model fit together, and where they will break.
* You can build something in the morning and brief an executive on it in the afternoon.
* You are comfortable with ambiguity and with being wrong quickly.
* You write and speak clearly.
** Program details
*** Two-year terms, with possible renewal. Start dates are rolling.
* Based at HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with time at Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.
* Fellows work as a small cohort, with a seat on the Everyday AI Accelerator team, a weekly standing meeting with the COO, and regular time with the President.
* Term-limited position, eligible for HHMI benefits. Base salary $150,000 to $200,000.
*
* How to apply
** Send a resume and a short note, one page at most, describing something you built with AI and what you learned from it. Include a link if it is public.
