GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is hiring a full-time Senior Design Specialist based in Cheyenne, WY
. In this dynamic role you will shape the future of Wyoming’s roadways by leading the development, refinement, and review of highway construction plans that support successful contract bidding. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Calculates and refines excavation, embankment, and haul quantities
  • Designs and details other roadway features such as guardrail installations, culverts, drainage ditches, storm sewer, and pedestrian facilities
  • Ensures designs meet the requirements of the WYDOT Road Design Manual and Design Guides, AASHTO Greenbook, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, and ADA Guidelines for Accessibility
  • Works with other engineering programs and with the design team to ensure the work is completed according to the scheduled dates set by the PCS system
  • Produces plans, attends inspections, writes reports, prepares exhibits, and attends public meetings
  • Formulates, reviews, and refines bid item summaries by calculating
  • Communicates and coordinates with other WYDOT Programs to ensure an accurate product
  • Assembles final contract plans and documents; generates slope-staking and blue‑top reports
  • Attends periodic workshops to increase skills and knowledge, and trains others in new methods and procedures
  • Travels for field inspections and meetings, with overnight stays as necessary
PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with WYDOT’s computer‑aided design software.

KNOWLEDGE
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of geometry, algebra, and trigonometry
  • Knowledge of highway engineering concepts and principles
  • Knowledge of Microstation computer drafting
  • Attention to detail
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience Substitution: 4‑6 years of progressive work experience (typically in the Transportation occupational group with design experience) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Design Specialist II. OR

Education: Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Engineering)

Experience: 0‑3 years of progressive work experience (typically in the Transportation occupational group with design experience) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Design Specialist II.

  • Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:
  • Acceptance of a permanent full‑time non‑exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment

  • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity – recruitment must have been opened to the public
  • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.
  • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12 month period.
  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
