Essential Functions- With direction and training from the supervisor and more experienced engineers, produces and checks designs of steel and concrete bridges, overhead sign structures, concrete box culverts, retaining walls, and other highway‑related structures, utilizing proper engineering theory and design principles in accordance with AASHTO specifications, ensuring accuracy and public safety.
- Utilizes various computer applications to perform engineering calculations and produce accurate, organized, and legible designs.
- Reviews designs for clarity, organization, and completeness.
- Checks structural details for conformance with the design, proper detailing procedures, accuracy, office standards, and completeness.
- Calculates estimated material quantities and construction costs.
- Utilizes information from meetings and site inspections, along with hydraulic, land use, and geological recommendations to aid in preliminary structure selections, bridge length determinations, structure repairs, rehabilitation, and cost comparison, with required supervision.
- Utilizes proper engineering theory and knowledge of computer development applications to assist in the development, testing, and maintenance of the BRASS suite of programs and other engineering software used in the design, review, and rating of bridges and structural components.
- Coordinates with the software programming consultant for the resolution of reported errors or bugs.
- Evaluates software and provides technical support for other bridge computer applications.
Preferences: Preference will be given to those with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures, PLUS an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) License or Fundamentals in Engineering (FE).
- Knowledge and competence in the principles, application, and interpretation of structural engineering design and theory.
- Knowledge of engineering fundamentals, i.e. highway geometrics, hydraulic design, and geotechnical engineering as they relate to Department practice.
- Knowledge of AASHTO design specifications, Program policies, and Department standards.
- Skilled in the use of computer applications for structural design and office automation.
- Ability to analyze and solve varied problems and produce complete, clear, and organized solutions.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
- Experience: 0‑2 years of progressive work experience in Engineering.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering.
