Area Information

Cheyenne Fire Rescue provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and community risk reduction to over 65,000 residents and visitors who live and work in Cheyenne. Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and the largest city in Wyoming. Cheyenne Fire Rescue was founded in 1909 and has grown to 100 members operating out of six (6) fire stations.

CFR deploys five (5) engine companies, one (1) ladder company, one (1) support unit, one (1) battalion chief, one (1) type 6 brush truck, and one (1) type 3 wildland engine. CFR operates five(5) specialty teams including a 17-member technical rescue team, a 27-member hazardous materials response team, a Tactical EMS team (TEMS), Wildland team, and a Community Paramedic Program.

CFR responds to over 10,000 calls for service annually. Cheyenne Fire Rescue became a CAPSE Accredited Fire Department in March of 2025. Cheyenne was the first municipal fire department in the state of Wyoming to achieve this. There are only 335 accredited agencies world-wide.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 12 months from date of hire

General

Job Description

Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and other emergency services as assigned. Maintains fire/EMS equipment, apparatus, stations, and facilities in a state of operational readiness. Participates in training, public education, and community risk reduction activities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency incidents including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue situations, and other calls for service within the City of Cheyenne and on mutual aid assignments
  • Perform firefighting operations including fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation, forcible entry, salvage and overhaul, operating pumps and aerial apparatus, and advancing hoselines
  • Provide emergency medical care in accordance with Wyoming Laws, WDHS Rules and Regulations, Regional EMS Protocols, and medical direction from base station physicians
  • Operate and maintain self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), personal protective equipment (PPE), fire apparatus, emergency medical equipment, and specialized tools and equipment
  • Document emergency responses through accurate and timely completion of incident reports, patient care reports, and other required documentation
  • Maintain station facilities, apparatus, equipment, and grounds in a clean and serviceable condition through daily inspections, testing, cleaning, and minor repairs
  • Participate in fire drills, training evolutions, physical fitness activities, and continuing education in firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, technical rescue, and related subjects
  • Complete 12-month probationary period, including required probationary packet and performance evaluations
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct pre-incident planning activities including building inspections, hydrant testing and mapping, and target hazard surveys to support effective emergency response
  • Participate in public education programs on fire prevention, life safety, and emergency preparedness topics for schools, businesses, and community organizations
  • Maintain positive working relationships with the public, other City personnel, and external agencies while representing the Department professionally
  • Assist in training new personnel and probationary firefighters as assigned
  • Participate in community events, station tours, and public relations activities
  • Assist with special projects, research, and departmental initiatives as directed
  • Perform all standard firefighter tasks and skills as required
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
