Highway Maintenance Craftsperson

City of Chicopee Department of Public Works Highway Division is hiring a Highway Maintenance Craftsperson to maintain roadways, sidewalks, trees, drains, sewer lines, and public infrastructure such as buildings.

• Perform construction maintenance work on streets, sidewalks, tree belts and other public property.
• Perform excavation, bracing, sheet piling and grading. Fill potholes and cave-ins.
• Maintain, clean and construct sewers, catch basins, drains and manholes. Clear overgrowth.
• Actively participate in snow and ice removal operations. Perform “Flag” duties at job sites on occasion.
• Erect manholes and catch basins. Lay sewer pipe and house waste connections. Construct sidewalk forms and finish concrete.
• May assist in Forestry operations as needed. Operate air compressor and jackhammer. Supervises others and works in the building and maintenance trades.
• Perform general labor duties as required. Drive highway maintenance vehicles and complete daily vehicle maintenance logs. Abide by City of Chicopee Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.

• Massachusetts Class B CDL License – Required.
• Massachusetts Class A CDL License – Must be obtained within one (1) year of hire – Required.
• High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or one to three (1-3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of and experience in construction, street and building maintenance, carpentry, and/or other skilled crafts.
• Working knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Willingness to perform heavy manual labor.
