Position: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
Department: DPW - Wastewater
Employment Status: Non-Exempt; UFCW 1459 Laborers;
Full-Time (40 Hours/Week)
Pay Grade: Grade 10L;
Step 05 – Step 08
Salary Range: $22.52/Hour - $26.29/Hour + Licenses
Schedule: Tue – Fri 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Sat 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Certifications/Licenses Required: Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License, Must obtain a Massachusetts Grade 3 WWTP Operator's License within three (3) months of hire, Must obtain Grade SC WWTP Operator's License within six (6) months of hire.
SUMMARY
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be responsible for supervising, participating in the operation and maintenance in all areas of the Public Utilities division of the DPW including but not limited to; pump stations, WWTP treatment plant, combined sewer over flow (CSO) treatment facilities, flood control facilities, and storm water detention facilities Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, pump stations, combined sewer overflow (CSO) treatment facilities and disposal equipment in accordance with all applicable Local, State, and Federal regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Monitors control panels and adjust valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage and ensure compliance with the Cities NPDES permit.
- Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine and make operational adjustments to processes.
- Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through unit processes such as filtering, settling, aeration, chlorination, screening, pumping, and sludge processing for disposal.
- Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings and makes adjustments as indicated.
- Checks machinery and equipment for malfunctions; conducts regular preventive maintenance; repairs, cleaning, painting and overhauls machinery and equipment including alarms, CSOs facilities, pump stations, flood control, WWTP facility, and meters gauges readings and power generating equipment.
- Gather information, update, input to computerized databases, and review for optimization of operations and maintenance records.
- Make (RTU) Remote terminal unit/Scada daily checks, also dry weather overflow (DWO) and CSO checks when required.
- Accept chemical deliveries to ensure all off-loading is performed to City standards.
- Observe all confined space entry requirements.
- Maintain operator's license according to MA DEP requirements.
- Fill in for Senior Operator when required.
- Responsible for maintaining operator shift coverage according to City policies.
- Provide chemical spill response for Public Utilities department, both city wide and for the Public Utilities division facilities.
- Responsible for maintaining the treatment plant in a clean and orderly condition.
- Performs all related duties to properly maintain a Water Pollution Control Works.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License.
- Must obtain a Massachusetts Grade 3 WWTP Operator's License within three (3) months of hire.
- Must obtain Grade SC WWTP Operator's License within six (6) months of hire.
- One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six (3-6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Some experience in maintenance work involving turf and landscape maintenance, working outdoors in adverse weather and other essential job duties listed above.
- General knowledge of parks and recreation department operations.
