Job Functions / Responsibilities
  • Verify that welding procedures are covered by WPS’s (welding procedure specifications).
  • Make certain that the welding and thermal cutting equipment is appropriate and in good operational condition to attain the prescribed results.
  • Make certain that welding procedures are qualified or pre-qualified in accordance with applicable AWS codes.
  • Ensure that welders are qualified in accordance with Kenworth specification R Welder Qualification Testing.
  • Perform visual inspections of welds (R sections 4.4, 4.5, and 5.0 and 756C-002).
  • Ensure that records are maintained that pertain to the qualification of welders, weld equipment, inspectors, and weld procedures; corrective action activities; and other such documentation as may be required.
  • Responsible for inspection of incoming lots of manufactured or purchased parts.
  • Determine acceptance or rejection status of inspected parts based on engineering specifications, standards, and tolerances.
  • Prepare and process inspection acceptance or rejection paperwork, updating records and computer files as directed.
  • Perform sort operations necessary to quarantine defective material already in the plant and/or installed on trucks on site.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with the Materials Dept, Production, and Suppliers regarding quality problems and part rejections.
  • Contact suppliers by phone and e-mail to obtain authorization to scrap or return rejected material.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a Certified Weld Inspector with proven successful experience and knowledge of all welding techniques, procedures, and standards.
  • Must understand and be able to accurately use traditional manual inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauge, hardness testers, etc).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have basic computer literacy (e-mail, windows operating system, word processors, etc).
  • Must be able to read and interpret part drawings in a variety of design formats (hand drawings, CADAM).
  • Must have a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to effectively negotiate/assign defective material responsibility with vendors, production, etc. as appropriate.
Desirable Qualificationsh3>
  • Ability to access the following on Paccar’s computer network:
    Kenworth Specs, Paccar Specs, Tech. Center Lab Reports, EDC, and the Parts Tracking System.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Ge Dimensioning and Tolerancing (able to interpret profile, flatness, angularity, MMC, multiple datum schemes, composite tolerances, etc.).
  • Formal training / education in quality tools and/or related technical fields. Quality tools to include:
    Six Sigma methodology, root cause analysis techniques, capability studies, corrective action methods, and various inspection techniques.
  • Certification by the American Society for Quality.
