Sqwá First Nation – Kindergarten Teacher (Full-Time, Permanent)

Sqwá First Nation is seeking a passionate and dedicated Kindergarten Teacher to provide a culturally enriched learning experience for children aged 5–6, preparing them for Grade 1 while supporting their academic, social, emotional, and cultural development.

Under the direction of the Principal and/or Designate, the successful candidate will deliver engaging, play-based instruction aligned with the BC Curriculum while integrating Stóō culture, traditions, and values into daily learning.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare classroom materials (art supplies, dress-up, playdough, etc.).
  • Assist children during morning classes.
  • Ensure work areas are clean and organized before/after activities.
  • Guide children in tidying up materials after use.
  • Communicate with parents regarding behavioural observations as needed.
  • Follow a weekly cleaning checklist for classroom maintenance.
  • Cultural Integration:
    Uses language teachers, local resources, and community knowledge
  • Curriculum Delivery:
    Implements BC Curriculum with 2-week advance lesson planning
  • Classroom Management:
    Maintains discipline and safety protocols
  • Assessment & Reporting:
    Conducts daily/weekly evaluations and formal report cards (3x/year)
  • Communication:
    Builds relationships with parents, staff, and community members.
  • Event Coordination:
    Plans graduations, concerts, and field trips.
  • Deliver daily kindergarten instruction using BC Curriculum, including Saxon Math and Read Well programs.
  • Conduct circle time, gym activities, silent reading, and supervised free play.
  • Administer Acadience and CAT 4 testing with ongoing student assessments.
  • Submit monthly calendars to Education Committee and create class newsletters.
  • Supervise Educational Assistants and support staff.
  • Maintain classroom safety standards and complete incident reports.
  • Integrate First Nations language and cultural teachings daily.
  • Attend professional development workshops and community events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and/ designate. Required
Qualifications
  • Valid BCTF Teaching Certificate.
  • Certification/training in:
    Saxon Math Program, Read Well literacy program, Class 4 Driver's License, and First Aid Certification
  • Minimum 1 year of direct teaching experience (Kindergarten preferred).
  • 3-5 years of experience working with children in an educational or childcare setting.
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check is required.
  • Crisis intervention training and coursework in sociology/behavioural management for children is necessary.
  • Experience with classroom setup, art/craft preparation, and play-based learning.
  • Familiarity with Acadience & CAT 4 testing systems.
  • Ability to maintain Confidentiality and abide by Sqwa First Nations’ Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Neat in appearance, outgoing, friendly, and cooperative personality.
Compensation & Work Schedule
  • Status: Full‑Time, Permanent (summers off)
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 35 hours/week (starting at 8:00 AM)
  • Salary: Based on education and experience in accordance with the BCTF Salary Grid
  • Start Date: End of August 2026
