Job Summary
We are currently looking to fill a  Relief Full-Time  opportunity for a  Environmental Health Officer  to support  Population & Public Health  located in  Chilliwack, B.C.  This position is available until May 2026, or until Return of the Incumbent.

Detailed Overview
Promotes and maintains a high standard of public health, environmental conditions, and environmental control standards; enforces applicable regulations and by-laws; identifies factors detrimental to community and environmental health and for the abatement of same; reviews and drafts standards, programs and controls; carries out public health and environmental control inspection duties; performs education, research, assessments, analytical tasks, and prepares relevant reports. Facilitates community engagement and capacity building to promote positive change in environment and population health;

advocates for healthy public policies that contribute to population health. This is a multi-site position to be carried out at various Fraser Health sites.

Responsibilities

Investigates complaints on public health and environmental control issues; issues orders and recommendations; re-inspects for conformance with regulations and standards; surveys conditions for hazards.

Inspects food processing/handling establishments, premises and buildings, plumbing, water and sewage systems, pools, tobacco retailers, personal services, child/residential care facilities, and related installations for compliance.

Performs water quality, drinking water, recreational water, wastewater and other environmental/pollution control duties.

Conducts epidemiological investigations into foodborne illness outbreaks and other diseases; initiates health assessments and follows up for compliance.

Investigates pest management issues and participates in continuous quality improvement activities.

Supports research, data analysis, and the development of improved standards and policies; drafts by-laws and regulations as needed.

Prepares reports, collects samples, submits for tests, interprets results, and testifies as required.

Provides consultation, education and technical support to the public, industry, professionals, government agencies and municipalities.

Reviews plans/proposals for facilities to ensure regulatory conformance; advises on building permits and business licenses.

Promotes population health strategies and evaluates built environment factors; contributes to education campaigns and program effectiveness.

Provides orientation to new staff and participates in program committees as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience

Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) from CIPHI; eligible for BC registration;
Pesticide Applicator's certificate. Valid BC Class V Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.

Skills & Abilities

Ability to analyze and interpret test/inspection results and determine compliance.

Effective written and verbal communication; public speaking and reporting.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships, work independently, and organize/prioritize tasks.
