We are seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused
Building Maintenance Worker
to support the operation of our new shelter and supportive housing facility.
Reporting to the Housing Manager, the Building Maintenance Worker will serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day building maintenance needs. This position is responsible for establishing preventative maintenance systems, conducting inspections, troubleshooting concerns, completing repairs, coordinating contractors, maintaining records, and helping ensure the building, equipment, and grounds remain safe and operational.
The successful candidate will be a practical problem-solver who can work independently, manage competing priorities, and interact professionally and respectfully with residents, staff, contractors, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities- Establish, monitor, and carry out preventative maintenance procedures and schedules for the building, equipment, and grounds.
- Conduct regular building and equipment inspections and identify maintenance, safety, security, and fire-related concerns.
- Complete general building maintenance and repairs, including carpentry, painting, drywall repair, basic plumbing, minor electrical tasks, equipment repairs, and general upkeep within the scope of the position.
- Repair furniture, construct shelving, replace fixtures and hardware, apply finishes, and complete other routine maintenance tasks.
- Identify short- and long-term maintenance priorities, capital needs, equipment requirements, and grounds-maintenance needs.
- Report significant property and maintenance concerns to the Housing Manager and make recommendations regarding major repairs or purchases.
- Contact contractors and tradespeople, obtain quotes, prepare labour and material estimates, and help coordinate major repairs.
- Monitor work completed by external contractors and confirm that maintenance requirements have been addressed.
- Develop and maintain effective maintenance systems, logs, schedules, inspection records, and reporting processes for the new facility.
- Complete maintenance logs, security incident reports, supply records, and other required documentation.
- Collect and remove garbage and recyclable materials and support the safe disposal of hazardous waste.
- Maintain exterior areas, including entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, lawns, and landscaped spaces.
- Complete seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow removal, mowing, weeding, pruning, watering, and removing leaves or debris.
- Transport equipment, furniture, materials, and supplies manually or with the use of carts and dollies.
- Operate a motor vehicle to collect or transport equipment, goods, and supplies.
- Arrange furniture and equipment for meetings, activities, and special events.
- Follow Cedar Strong’s health and safety procedures and all applicable WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Identify hazards, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and take reasonable steps to correct or report unsafe conditions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Grade 10 education supplemented by relevant vocational training, such as a building maintenance course.
- At least two years of building maintenance experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of trades and contractor resources in Hope, the surrounding area, and the Fraser Valley.
- Valid WHMIS certification.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Valid BC driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Strong knowledge of general building maintenance, repairs, preventative maintenance, and groundskeeping.
