The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the sewage treatment function of the Utility Operations Department through reliable performance of monitoring and servicing sewage equipment, treatment plant and related equipment, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices. The incumbent will be required to perform a variety of tasks varying in degree of complexity and required knowledge as related to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation.
- Operate sludge disposal equipment (anaerobic digestors and belt filter press) efficiently.
- Tend aeration equipment; clear coarse materials and obstructions from screens to maintain correct flow of influent and effluent; remove and clean screens.
- Scrub processing tanks and walkways; clean precipitate, sludge and wash from sumps and tanks.
- Assist electrical and mechanical operators as required; maintain cleanliness of plant and grounds.
- Carry out preventive maintenance procedures/programs; take samples and perform tests as required; update records and logs.
- Assist management in equipment repair on weekends and other absences of plant staff.
Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Supervisor III ‑ WWTP.
Work ScheduleThe incumbent will work any five consecutive days within the hours as prescribed in publicized shift schedules and on occasion work overtime as authorized.
Requirements & QualificationsEducation:
Must have completed grade 12 education.
- Able to obtain EOCP Wastewater Treatment Certificate Level I Certificate within 18 months of employment.
- Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
- Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in treatment plant operations.
- Able to understand the principles of the functions and operation and to apply the techniques of tending and maintaining sewage processing and sludge disposal equipment.
- Able to work in wet or humid conditions while subject to odours, fumes and gases.
- Sound knowledge of routine duties and able to perform with minimum supervision.
- Knowledgeable in the monitoring of electrical and mechanical control panels and gauges.
- Good knowledge in electrical and mechanical maintenance repair and preventive maintenance programs.
- Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors and other members of staff.
- Able to relate to the public and be neat and presentable in appearance.
The incumbent must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather and under conditions of gases, fumes and odours. The incumbent must wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of duties.
