Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse, Pediatrics provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to pediatric patients in a pediatric emergency unit and/or pediatric emergency observation unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment of the pediatric patient on admission and at regular intervals; perform nursing diagnosis, identify risk factors, and plan, perform and evaluate nursing interventions.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and inter‑professional team members to develop, implement, and modify care plans; establish therapeutic relationships and advocate for patient/family privacy, dignity, and autonomy.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning; update care plans and collaborate with the inter‑professional team and Patient Care Coordinator to ensure effective delivery.
  • Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, delegate tasks, and make referrals according to protocols.
  • Provide rapid pediatric assessments with Emergency Department staff to facilitate transfer, treatment, and discharge.
  • Teach patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance; assess learning needs and provide education and demonstration of care activities.
  • Plan and discuss referral information with patients and families and initiate referrals to appropriate health care or community agencies.
  • Document assessments, diagnoses, interventions, outcomes, and referrals per practice standards.
  • Participate in in‑services, educational programs, and maintain clinical competence within the area of practice.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students, promoting family‑centered care and best practice principles.
  • Participate in designated programs, professional committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned.
  • Provide feedback on patient care programs, policies, and equipment to the Manager or delegate.
  • Engage in quality improvement and risk management; identify issues, report safety concerns, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participate in research and special projects, collecting and interpreting data as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Graduation from an approved School of Nursing; current Registered Nurse registration with the BCCNM; two (2) recent years of related clinical nursing experience in the designated area; completion of appropriate postgraduate coursework or certification, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    • Use evidence‑based information to support nursing decisions.
    • Effective communication with patients, families, the public, medical staff, and inter‑professional teams using verbal, written, and electronic means.
    • Promote person‑centered care, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and patient advocacy.
    • Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem‑solve.
    • Proficiency in initiating and maintaining intravenous therapy.
    • Plan, organize, and prioritize work in a changing environment.
    • Work independently and collaboratively with the inter‑professional team.
    • Teach and instruct patients, families, and community partners on essential health topics.
    • Adapt to change and promote improvement.
    • Operate relevant equipment and computer applications.
    • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
