Overview
The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care to patients in an acute medical unit, in partnership with an interprofessional care team.
Responsibilities
Assesses patients and collects information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment. Makes a nursing diagnosis and determines if the condition can be improved by an appropriate nursing intervention. Plans, performs, and evaluates nursing interventions and care.Collaborates with patients and their families/care givers in developing and encouraging participation in the care plan, advocating for privacy, dignity, and autonomy.Participates in care and discharge planning, ensuring the care plan is established and implemented effectively and updates it as needed in collaboration with the interprofessional team.Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, assigns tasks to support staff, and refers to the interprofessional team according to established protocols.Collaborates with team members (Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other health professionals) to identify and resolve issues and adjust care plans.Teaches patients and families/care givers about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance, assessing learning needs and providing information and demonstrations.Plans and discusses referral information with patients and their families/care givers and initiates referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies in collaboration with the team.Documents assessments, nursing diagnoses, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes, and referrals according to practice standards.Participates on nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned or agreed upon with the Manager.Participates in research and quality improvement activities, identifying patient care issues and recommending corrective actions.Attends in‑services and other educational programs, identifies learning goals, and maintains up‑to‑date clinical competence.Acts as a preceptor or mentor to assigned staff and students, sharing information, demonstrating care activities, and supporting orientation.Provides feedback to the Manager regarding the effectiveness of patient care programs, policies, and procedures, and equipment.Performs other related duties as required.Education and Training
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Completion of a Cardiology component of Post‑Basic Critical Care course, or post‑basic High Acuity Course, approved Arrhythmia interpretation course plus one year recent experience in a cardiac monitoring or telemetry unit, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current Basic Rescuer Certificate.
Skills and Abilities- Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
- Ability to perform initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide nursing care through appropriate technical and therapeutic interventions.
- Effective communication with patients, families/care givers, the public, medical staff, and the interprofessional team using verbal, written, and electronic means.
- Advocacy for person‑centered care, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and patient advocacy.
- Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem‑solve effectively.
- Teach and instruct patients and families/care givers about health‑related topics essential to well‑being.
- Organize and prioritize work.
- Collaborate with and promote teamwork among the interprofessional team.
- Use factual information, prior learning, and evidence‑based practice to support nursing decisions and actions.
- Operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
