Job SummaryFraser Health is seeking a Clinical Mentor – Mental Health and Substance Use to support high-quality, client-centered care through expert clinical guidance, mentorship, and leadership. About the RoleThe Clinical Mentor functions as an experienced clinical resource, mentor, and champion for excellent client care. Working closely with nurse educators and interprofessional team leaders, the role provides rapid, elbow-to-elbow clinical mentorship and practice support to nursing staff and other team members within mental health and substance use services.
Using advanced clinical knowledge and experience, the Clinical Mentor supports staff skill development, clinical decision-making, and professional growth while promoting best practice standards and program quality.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct, hands-on clinical mentorship and practice support to nurses and team members.
- Act as a clinical resource, formally advising nursing staff on standards of practice, clinical guidelines, and nursing processes.
- Support staff learning and development through observation, coaching, demonstration of best practices, and constructive feedback.
- Promote clinical decision-making and problem-solving related to client care.
- Observe staff during client care activities and intervene as needed to model appropriate care delivery.
- Identify individual and team learning needs through observation, discussion, competency assessments, practice changes, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with nurse educators and interprofessional leaders to establish learning priorities and deliver effective mentorship and education.
- Contribute to clinical education initiatives and support preceptors/preceptees and mentors/mentees using adult learning principles.
- Take on a leadership role in supporting skills development and advancing clinical practice initiatives.
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Three (3) years of recent Acute or Community Mental Health nursing experience , relevant to the designated clinical area.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring nursing staff and supporting clinical practice.
- Leadership training or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle may be required.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical mentorship and clinical practice support.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family-centered model of care.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize scope of practice for designated patient population.
- Demonstrated ability to provide consultation, direction and leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate, mentor and coach.
- Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- Knowledge of relevant clinical practice standards/guidelines and care pathways.
- Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client/patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in working and verbally on a one-to-one basis and/or group setting.
- Demonstrated ability to guide and/or deal with others in resolution of conflict issues.
- Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
- Demonstrated ability to use critical thinking skills in the approach to patient/client/resident care.
- Demonstrated ability to lead change and support staff through transition.
- Demonstrated skill in the application of techniques appropriate to the assessment and treatment of designated client population utilizing best available evidence-informed practice.
- Demonstrated ability to promote a supportive, creative learning environment and engage in continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a computerized client/patient care information system as well as applicable word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
