The RN/RPN demonstrates nursing expertise and provides clinical leadership through direct care activities including nursing assessments, crisis intervention, patient and family education, and health promotion. The role prioritizes, delegates tasks to support staff, and guides a therapeutic program within a fast‑growing health care setting.
Responsibilities- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for assigned patients, identifying problems and strengths through nursing diagnosis and planned interventions.
- Participates in the total therapeutic program of the Unit and supports interprofessional conferences.
- Collects data from observation, communication, and physical assessment to provide appropriate care.
- Writes accurate, timely reports of assessments, observations, patient and family education, and evaluations of nursing care.
- Communicates and consults with health‑care team members, explains care plans, and ensures patient rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, and dignity.
- Participates in quality improvement and research activities, collecting data and identifying patient‑care issues.
- Serves on nursing and hospital committees and councils aimed at improving patient care and the work environment.
- Orients and educates nursing staff and students, acting as a preceptor or mentor; attends educational programs for competency maintenance.
- Evaluates patient‑care programs, techniques, standards, and procedures, providing feedback on effectiveness.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices.
- Performs other professionally related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). May require completion of a substance‑use certificate program.
Skills and Abilities- Complete initial and ongoing mental‑health and substance‑use client assessments; provide nursing care with crisis interventions and therapeutic procedures.
- Knowledge of mental illness and substance‑use treatment, psychopharmacology, and related legislation and policies.
- Counselling and group facilitation skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication with patients, families, public, and health‑care teams.
- Promote person‑centered care, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy for diverse populations.
- Educate patients and families on health benefits and well‑being topics.
- Organize and prioritize work; collaborate and foster teamwork.
- Apply evidence‑informed practice to support nursing decisions.
- Operate related equipment and computer applications.
- Maintain physical ability to perform duties of the position.
