Overview
Applications are invited for the position of Specialty Doctor in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.
We anticipate the successful candidate will embrace all aspects of the speciality including surgery, audit, research, innovation and education. We welcome candidates who will work to expand the surgical repertoire of the team and drive clinical initiatives.
This is a 6‑month post with the possibility of a further 6‑month extension.
Main Duties- All surgeons practice oncoplastic breast surgery (including therapeutic mammoplasty), lipo‑modeling and immediate breast reconstruction for mastectomy patients with pedicle flaps (LD and TRAM) and implant‑based reconstruction with biological mesh.
- Work in a multidisciplinary team with 3 consultant breast oncologists who provide adjuvant treatments, and Plastic Surgery colleagues at the Royal Preston Hospital who provide free‑perforator flap support.
- Co‑ordinate with the radiotherapy unit based at the Royal Preston Hospital and the Central Lancashire Breast Unit at the Chorley & South Ribble Hospital site.
- Participate in new‑patient breast clinics (10 per week) and in MDT meetings on Thursdays to discuss biopsy results.
- Assist in the operation theatre, including 9 dedicated breast surgery theatre sessions per week.
- Collaborate with the breast care nurse team for cancer follow‑up and results clinics.
- Engage in audit, research and educational initiatives related to breast cancer surgery.
The Trust is a cancer centre with a radiotherapy unit at the Royal Preston Hospital. The Central Lancashire Breast Unit, based at the Chorley & South Ribble Hospital site, opened in July 2012. The mammography suite includes 2 digital mammogram machines equipped for stereotactic and vacuum‑assisted biopsies, 2 ultrasound rooms, and 2 portable ultrasound machines for clinic use. The service treats approximately 330 breast cancers per annum.
