Climbing Wall Facilitator – San Diego State University
The Climbing Wall Facilitator supports the safe and exciting operation of Camp Bashor’s climbing wall as part of the camp’s COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) program. This position focuses on participant safety, equipment management, and delivering a positive adventure experience consistent with Scouting America’s National Camp Standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Operate the climbing wall in compliance with Scouting America COPE and Climbing Standards.
- Perform safety inspections of climbing lines, harnesses, helmets, and belay systems.
- Conduct participant briefings on safety procedures, equipment use, and course rules.
- Assist with wall setup, maintenance, and documentation of inspections.
- Monitor participant progress and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Maintain professionalism and promote Scouting values at all times.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and other camp duties as assigned.
- Minimum age: 18 (required).
- Prior experience with rock climbing, climbing walls, or adventure facilitation preferred.
- Ability to work at heights and in outdoor environments for extended periods.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with a focus on safety and teamwork.
- Positive attitude and commitment to youth development and outdoor education.
- COPE/Climbing Instructor Training(s):
- Scouting America National Camping School (NCS) – COPE Director or COPE Instructor Level 1, 2, or higher (preferred, training available).
- Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) – Certified Challenge Course Manager, Practitioner Certification Level 1, 2, or higher.
- Professional Ropes Course Association (PRCA) – Qualified Instructor Level 1 or 2.
- First Aid / CPR / AED Certification – required (current within 12 months).
- Belay and Rescue Techniques Training – preferred but training available.
- Frequent standing for extended periods.
- Use of hands to handle, control, or feel objects or tools.
- Frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted, requiring proper bending.
- Walking and hiking for distances up to 2 miles at a time outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions, dust, pollen, plants, insects, and wildlife.
- Competitive salary based on experience and certification level ($20 – $25 per hour).
