We invite you to build your transportation career  senior rail engineering team is seeking a success‑oriented Senior Rail Engineer to play a key role in our freight rail program.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead railroad or civil engineering design projects as Discipline or Task Lead.
  • Support Project Managers with marketing, contracting, and client visits.
  • Manage scope, budget, schedule, and develop design criteria, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Perform railroad and/or civil engineering design, analysis, and planning for rail projects.
  • Lead and perform detailed QC reviews of projects.
  • Lead client and stakeholder visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspections as needed.
  • Attend industry events and represent HDR.
  • Mentor younger staff and support technical development.
  • Supervise junior staff performance of engineering tasks.
  • Work across industries with rail, industrial, terminal, utility, agency, DOT, port, transit, and other clients.
  • Provide leadership across technical disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience in all aspects of rail and/or civil design projects.
  • Familiarity with AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering and other railroad design guidelines.
  • Knowledge of railroad analysis programs and design software.
  • Desire to mentor staff and grow in railroad industry skills.
  • Ability to lead projects through design and production, coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Project Management experience for rail, industrial, or transit clients.
  • Client development or client management experience.
  • Construction inspection or management experience is a plus.
  • Experience in technical writing, communication, and presentation to clients and public.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10 years of experience in railway engineering and managing complex multidisciplinary railway projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Proficiency with Micro Station, Open Rail Designer/Open Roads Designer, and/or AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Skilled in technical writing, communication, and presentation to clients and public.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team on railway projects.
  • Familiar with water and wastewater treatment processes and technologies.
  • Computer literate with MS Office (Word, Excel, Project).
