The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day‑to‑day accounting operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, timely financial reporting, and supporting the mission through sound financial management. The role plays a critical part in supporting the mission by assisting the Director of Accounting and Director of Finance with managing financial statements and budgets, strengthening internal controls, overseeing accounting staff, and ensuring the organization meets nonprofit financial standards, grant requirements, and regulatory obligations.
Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting and General Ledger Management- Assist Director of Accounting in preparing monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit regulations.
- Assist in overseeing general ledger activities, including reviewing all journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to Leadership.
- Ensure compliance with IRS regulations for nonprofits (e.g., Form 990 support).
- Assist Director of Finance in developing annual budgets and monitor actual vs. budget performance.
- Maintain chart of accounts and financial reporting structures to align with programmatic and grant reporting needs.
- Manage the payroll process, including payroll preparation, review, approval and submission, while ensuring payroll accuracy and compliance with federal/state/local laws.
- Manage the organization’s fixed asset accounting processes, ensuring accurate recording, compliance with accounting standards, and timely reporting.
- Manage grant accounting, including restricted/unrestricted funds, grant budgets, and donor restricted revenues.
- Ensure proper tracking and reporting of grant spending to funders.
- Prepare financial documentation for grant applications and renewals.
- Support annual audits by preparing schedules and documentation for auditors.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal accounting policies and procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Minimum 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Experience with EHR systems and financial software preferred (e.g., Sage Intacct, REDCap, Next Gen).
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments.
