• Material testing: conduct standardized tests on asphalt and aggregate samples to determine properties such as specific gravity, air voids, and gradation.
• Equipment maintenance: operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory testing equipment to ensure accurate results.
• Data management: prepare and submit detailed test reports, often using Microsoft Excel, to communicate findings to relevant personnel.
• Quality control: ensure that materials meet the quality standards and specifications set by ODOT and project requirements.
• Safety and compliance: adhere to all health, safety, and environmental protocols, including proper use of PPE.
• Sample handling: collect, prepare and organize samples of asphalt, aggregates, and other construction materials.
• Field and lab work: perform some field testing, such as density checks on newly paved sections, and assist engineers as needed.

• Education:
  
  A High School Diploma or GED is typically required; a college degree is an advantage.
• Certifications:
  
  ODOT Asphalt Concrete School levels 1 and 2, Aggregate certification levels 1 and 2, and an ACI Concrete Strength Testing certificate are mandatory.
• Technical knowledge:
  Familiarity with ASTM and AASHTO standards, and knowledge of specific testing equipment such as the NCAT ignition oven.
• Technical skills:
  Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
