Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at Cincinnati Children’s are recognized as a vital part of our healthcare delivery team. The Heart Institute is the home of the Midwest’s first comprehensive Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). We provide state-of-the-art care for complex medical and surgical patients, from newborns to adults.

Care Services

The CICU team offers a wide range of expert care, including:

  • Neonatal diagnosis and stabilization
  • Postoperative surgical care
  • Care following complex catheter interventions and hybrid procedures
  • Management of complex arrhythmias
  • Care of pre- and post-operative cardiac transplant patients
  • Management of pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and cardiomyopathy
  • Care of patients with heart disease who require intensive care for non-cardiac diseases or surgeries
  • Care of patients requiring mechanical heart assist, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or ventricular assist devices (Berlin Heart, Heart Mate II, Syn Cardia TAH, and others)

Representative Responsibilities

  • Patient Care:
    Perform history and/or physical exams, assess and diagnose illnesses, formulate and monitor treatment plans
  • Outcomes Identification and Planning:
    Develop outcomes as measurable goals, prioritize and evaluate individualized plans of care
  • Professional Practice:
    Maintain professional behaviors, participate in quality improvement activities, integrate ethical considerations and research findings into practice
  • Care Management:
    Maintain competency in skills and procedures, promote self-management and family-centered care, employ diverse strategies and interventions to promote health and a safe environment
  • Evaluation:
    Use systematic and ongoing evaluation of assessment data and outcomes to revise or resolve diagnoses, outcomes, and plans of care

Required

  • Masters degree in related field, clinical license, certification, or training, or Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree, Acute Care Certification
  • Licensure and certification in accordance with CCHMC Delineation of Privileges
  • Multi-state licensure in addition to Ohio licensure may be required based on subspecialty

Preferred

  • Experience as an APP in subspecialty
