SummaryPosition is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
QualificationsApplicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Education:
Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed. - Licensure:
Full active current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) or District of Columbia. - English Language Proficiency:
Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). - Grade Determinations: GS-3. None beyond the basic requirements.
- GS-04:
Employees may be appointed at or advanced to GS-4 if they meet any of the following criteria:- (a) Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN.
- (b) Graduation from an approved school (which may be waived per paragraph 4 of Section
C) and one year of experience in nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical‑nursing or patient‑care facility. - (c) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
- GS‑05 and GS‑06 requirements include at least one year of qualifying experience at the level below, demonstrated ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care, effective education for patients, emergency response, and teamwork skills. Detailed qualifications are available in the official VA qualification standards.
- Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity.
- Potentially long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
- Transferring patients and objects may be required.
- Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided.
- This is an open continuous announcement to fill Licensed Practical Nurse vacancies in the Medical Service at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.
- The first round of applicants will be reviewed for consideration on 12/23/2025; the final review will be sent on 12/31/2025.
- Provides care with minimal RN supervision to a select group of patients.
- Performs and documents focused assessments (pain assessment, fall risk assessment) and reports abnormal findings to RN team leader or charge nurse.
- Performs Accu‑Check glucose screen, takes and records vital signs, and reports significant deviations immediately.
- Evaluates nutritional needs, including feeding assistance.
- Actively participates in interdisciplinary team planning and patient care meetings.
- Utilizes problem‑solving processes when patient problems arise.
- Informs RN about data obtained pertaining to the problem.
- Offers solutions and feedback to ancillary members to improve performance.
- Accepts and mentors non‑RN staff and student nurses.
- Provides patient/family education and emergency care coordination.
- Establishes constructive relationships with patients and families.
- Fosters an environment of respect for patient and family rights to privacy and dignity.
- Actively seeks out educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills.
- Serves as a preceptor in orienting, educating, and training less experienced staff for complex and specialized tasks.
- Work schedule varies by work area; will be discussed during the interview process.
