Position OverviewThe veterinary assistant provides support to veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate care to all patients
- Greet patients and their owners, take weight and vital signs upon arrival
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs)
- Calm and soothe anxious patients
- Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.)
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs
- Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, recognize and report unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
- Communicate positively with clients, ensuring they feel comfortable leaving with their pet(s)
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
- Maintain cleanliness of the hospital: clean equipment, kennels, facilities; safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
- Bath and care for overnight patients; ensure each animal is clean and groomed prior to release
- Adhere to safety and wellness regulations
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Maintain accurate medical records
- Show up for work regularly; full-time presence at work is essential for every shift
- Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
- Respond respectfully with urgency to directions from the DVM or LVTs
- Perform any other duties as assigned by Manager, including specialty area tasks (dentistry, surgery, emergency, etc.)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 18 years of age and able to drive to work
- Customer service experience; animal experience is a plus
- Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered
- Maintains current knowledge and seeks continuing education and skill improvement
- Ability to restrain animals, fill prescriptions, and monitor sedation procedures
- Comfortable working with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors
- Knowledge of hospital procedures, policies, services, client/patient protocols, computer systems, and standard veterinary terminology
- May involve extended keyboard or workstation time, prolonged standing, walking, lifting, or heavy animal handling (up to 50 lb)
- Physically demanding skills may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and varying lifting weights
- Animal handling and restraint experience; veterinary medical knowledge of vaccines and preventions
