Position: FIRE CADET (CIVILIAN) YOUTH SERVICES UNIT

Overview

The Summer Cadet Program provides support for students interested in Fire Fighter work who are not yet eligible to become Fire Recruits. It enables them to continue their education, encourages participation in the Fire Recruit examination, and helps ensure the future of our organization by recruiting and retaining quality employees.

Cadets will assist the Fire Department in a variety of duties under direct supervision, interacting with the public and performing other tasks as assigned. They will help keep the City safe and instill a sense of pride in their community.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Fire Department in tasks as assigned under direct supervision.
  • Interact with the public and perform duties assigned.
  • Patrol city neighborhoods and attend community events.
  • Learn and practice various Fire Techniques through classroom and hands‑on training.
  • Participate in department‑sponsored training and classes.
  • Wearing provided uniforms.
  • Complete written evaluations at the beginning and end of the program.
  • Work 24–30 hours per week.
Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in an Ohio high school or have graduated from an Ohio high school less than six months ago.
  • Minimum age at the start date is 14 years old; maximum age is 18 years old.
  • Must provide two recommendation forms completed by family members, teachers, mentors, or friends.
  • Recommendation forms must be submitted via the provided link.
  • Cadets must be able to stand and walk during a shift of up to 8 hours (maximum 30 hours per week).
  • Cadets must participate in physical fitness training for less than one hour per day.
  • Must participate in CPR classes.
  • Must perform duties in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must observe and report unsafe conditions.
  • Must be able to carry tools and fire equipment that may weigh more than 25 pounds.
Additional Information

This position is an internship, part‑time role within the Government Administration sector, classified under Other, Information Technology, and Management. Referrals are encouraged to increase interview chances.
