The COBOL Software Developer III is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting business-critical applications built on COBOL and mainframe technologies. This role requires advanced knowledge of COBOL programming, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-performance software solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, code, test, debug, and document COBOL programs for business applications.
  • Enhance, maintain, and support existing mainframe applications to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Participate in system analysis, requirements gathering, and solution design.
  • Optimize existing code for efficiency and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, and system administrators to deliver quality software.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with coding standards, security policies, and best practices.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance where needed.
  • Prepare technical documentation including flowcharts, diagrams, and program specifications.
  • Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
  • 5–7+ years of experience in COBOL programming and mainframe development.
  • Proficiency with COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and related mainframe utilities.
  • Strong understanding of batch and online transaction processing systems.
  • Experience with system testing, debugging, and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with source code management tools (Endevor, Changeman, or similar).
  • Ability to analyze complex systems and provide innovative solutions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in financial services, insurance, or government systems is a plus.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Time management and prioritization.
  • Adaptability to changing business needs and technologies.
