Overview
Firmware Engineer – Embedded Linux – Cincinnati, OH
Lead firmware projects in the med‑tech space, guiding a team of engineers, shaping architecture, and ensuring compliance with FDA/ISO 13485 standards. Hybrid role: in‑office 4 days + 1 remote day.
Responsibilities- Participate in architecture decisions and design of custom embedded Linux platforms and OEM modules.
- Design the software framework for diverse connectivity options, including advanced BLE features and next‑generation wireless technologies.
- Implement secure boot and robust over‑the‑air update mechanisms across the full software lifecycle.
- Mentor junior engineers on embedded Linux best practices and real‑time design.
- Resolve complex, system‑level issues involving hardware, kernel, and user‑space interactions.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with software, cybersecurity, and other engineering teams during product design, development, and post‑launch sustaining activities.
- Contribute to formal software documentation and verification strategy, ensuring compliance with FDA design controls and QMS (ISO 13485 / 21 CFR 820).
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 4+ years of firmware experience, with a focus on signal acquisition, wireless technologies, and medical device software.
- Deep knowledge of the Linux kernel, device drivers, and hardware abstraction layers.
- Proven experience designing and shipping products with advanced wireless capabilities, particularly BLE.
- Experience developing medical device software under FDA (21 CFR 820) and international (ISO 13485) regulations, including formal design control processes.
- Strong C/C++ skill set and modern C++ system design patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects, mentor engineers, and make critical design decisions.
- Embedded Linux system development on ARM‑based SoCs or SoMs.
- Secure boot, application‑level cryptography, and graphics pipelines or display frameworks.
- Software lifecycle management – secure boot, OTA updates, and traceability.
- Mentoring, coaching, and technical leadership.
- Quality and regulatory documentation for FDA/ISO processes.
- Lead and coach a team of engineers, fostering professional growth.
