About This Role

Do you want to be the first chair attorney litigating administrative hearings, arguing writs, motions, and appeals in civil court while maintaining a work‑life balance and collaborating with a supportive team of attorneys and assistants? Join CalHR’s Legal Division, work on diverse labor and employment duties, conduct training, investigations, and provide in‑house counsel.

Responsibilities
  • Litigate a wide variety of labor and employment cases, including civil appellate matters.
  • Conduct workplace investigations and provide in‑house counsel on employment and personnel matters.
  • Draft legal opinions for high‑level executives on sensitive issues and projects.
  • Represent CalHR and other state departments in state and federal civil litigation and appellate courts.
  • Manage cases from inception through resolution, serving as the primary attorney on matters.
  • Mentor junior attorneys within a team of 15–20 attorneys.
Qualifications
  • California State BAR License.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years experience in labor and employment litigation, including appellate work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience before superior or federal courts and/or administrative agencies.
  • Knowledge of labor and employment law and administrative law.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
Special Requirements
  • Provide a copy of the CA State BAR License prior to hire.
