About

the Role

The Regional Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is a frontline fundraiser and a vital member of Scripps College’s advancement team. Reporting to the Director of Development and Major Gifts, the MGO is responsible for securing philanthropic support from alumnae, parents, and friends of the College through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects.

The MGO manages a portfolio of 75‑100 donors and prospects capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more and plays a critical role in advancing the College’s strategic fundraising priorities, including capital projects, endowed scholarships, and current‑use support.

We are hiring two Regional Major Gifts Officers:

  • One focused on the Southwest territory
  • One focused on the East Coast territory

The anticipated annual base salary range for these positions is $68,640 – $81,500 based on experience.

Responsibilities

Major Gift Fundraising & Portfolio Management

  • Develop and execute individualized strategies to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 75‑100 major gift prospects aligned with Scripps College’s strategic plan.
  • Conduct a minimum of 120 donor visits annually, resulting in 24 or more major gift solicitations per year.
  • Prepare and present compelling written and verbal proposals in support of institutional priorities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely contact reports, prospect plans, and donor records within the College’s CRM system.
  • Collaborate with development leadership to build and sustain a strong pipeline of major and planned gift donors.

Strategic Donor Engagement & Stewardship

  • Strengthen alumnae and parent engagement through one‑on‑one meetings, regional events, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Partner with colleagues in donor relations, annual giving, and alumnae engagement to deliver a coordinated and meaningful donor experience.
  • Develop and implement tailored stewardship strategies that demonstrate the impact of philanthropy and the College’s ability to steward gifts with integrity.

Travel & Territory Management

  • Proactively plan and execute monthly travel within the assigned region (approximately 5‑15 days per month).
  • Represent Scripps College at regional events, in‑home visits, and other donor‑facing opportunities.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between donors and campus partners, including faculty and senior administrators.
  • Participate in cross‑departmental fundraising strategy and planning efforts.
  • Contribute to a strong, campus‑wide culture of philanthropy.

Operations, Measurement & Analysis

  • Develop goals and metrics to measure outcomes of fundraising strategies for internal and external reporting.
  • Analyze engagement and fundraising trends among alumnae, parents, and friends.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the College’s database systems and data strategy.
