Position Overview:

The Facilities Department supports the Institute’s mission by maintaining equipment, buildings, and systems. Under the general direction of the Facilities Manager, the HVAC and Maintenance Technician performs routine building maintenance tasks in one or more fields such as carpentry, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, etc.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of three years of facility maintenance experience, including hands‑on work with HVAC and electrical systems and a basic understanding of plumbing and carpentry. Experience in private or public educational facilities is preferred. HVAC certification is preferred but not required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC systems, including air handlers, split systems, chillers, boilers, thermostats, and building automation controls.
  • Monitor and adjust HVAC and electrical systems for optimal comfort, safety, and energy performance.
  • Diagnose issues in mechanical systems to minimize downtime and maintain energy efficiency. Perform routine building maintenance tasks, including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and masonry work.
  • Perform minor electrical maintenance to include, but not be limited to, replacement or repair of fixtures, bulbs, tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, using appropriate hand, power, and specialty tools.
  • Perform minor plumbing maintenance such as replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices.
  • Perform minor painting, carpentry, and masonry work using brush, sprayer, or roller to apply paints, stains, and varnishes, hanging doors, fitting locks and handles.
  • Reconfigure, install, position, and remount modular offices and space to accommodate user needs and maximize office space using various hand, power, and specialty tools, dollies, and hand trucks.
  • Prepare surfaces and paint various structures and equipment to preserve wood and metal parts from corrosion and maintain a safe, comfortable working environment using various painting equipment and related tools.
  • Transport materials, tools, and equipment to and within campus sites as required.
  • Participate in special projects assigned by the Facilities Manager and the CFO.
  • Be aware, understand, and comply with regulatory authorities such as OSHA, Cal‑OSHA, and others to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Observe and report any defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on campus facilities. Notify the Facilities Manager if immediate assistance or action is required. Report discrepancies or necessary follow‑ups to the supervisor.
  • Assist other facilities and maintenance staff with daily assignments and projects as needed, including support with electrical, plumbing, grounds, furniture moves/setups, and event support.
  • Assist with communication to or directly communicate with internal faculty and staff regarding the status of repairs and replacement.
  • Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas, and instructions.
  • Safely and efficiently operate equipment.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as needed and as assigned.
