The Louis

A. Johnson VA Medical Center is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia and serves a veteran population in north central West Virginia and adjacent counties in Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT will remain open until March 31, 2026.

Qualifications and Basic Requirements

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training:
    Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee with five years of verified practice in the United States
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis; PRPs are not independent practitioners and will have a limited scope of practice under supervision
  • Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Board Certified (additional qualification)
  • Physical Requirements:

    lifting up to 35 pounds intermittently; moderate carrying (15–35 pounds) intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices as per Safe Patient Handling Policy; pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulders, walking, standing, kneeling, and repeated bending (intermittent)

Duties
  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until March 31, 2026
  • The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be October 15, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month
  • Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur until positions are filled
  • Provide comprehensive patient care in the form of consultative inpatient care
  • Manage patients with ongoing medical conditions in acute and intensive care inpatient settings, in collaboration with other services
  • Interview, examine, select diagnostic testing appropriately, and interpret results to coordinate patient care from admission to discharge
  • Communicate and document clearly with patients and medical personnel to coordinate care
  • Work in conjunction with mid-level providers
  • Procedural skills may include EKG interpretation, TPA administration, and simple vent management
  • Provide consultative input to other service lines in inpatient care
  • Participate in Committee Structure and contribute to quality assurance programs and chart reviews
  • Complete medical records in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations
  • Refer patients to subspecialists or other professionals as appropriate
  • Prepare patient discharge summaries within 7 days
