This position serves as a personal guide, and liaison for individuals with substance use disorders identified in the Emergency Department or in WVU Medicine affiliated treatment settings. The recovery coach supports patients by assisting them with identifying treatment needs, developing, maintaining, and monitoring individualized treatment plans, and supporting patients to remain in treatment. The recovery coach's duties include providing outreach, support, recovery check-ups on site in the Emergency Department, in treatment at CRC and in the community and functioning as part of a treatment team.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of state or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification training with a minimum of 40 hours total in the following domains:
    Ethics, Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Planning.
  • Documentation of additional Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if certification < 40 hours to meet training hour requirement prior to onboarding.
  • West Virginia state and Federal criminal background check required for DHHR WV CARES regulated area.
  • Bureau of Medical Services Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification or WVCBAPP certification within one (1) year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Valid driver's License
  • WVCBAPP Peer Recovery Certification
  • Certificate of completion of the CCAR Recovery Coaching in the Emergency Department
  • Active participation in the recovery for two or more years and current active attendance at community recovery meetings
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work actively with patients with Substance Use Disorders identified in the Emergency Department or other WVU Medicine treatment settings. Help link patients to outpatient treatment.
  • Provide mentoring through life-experience to individuals experiencing substance use problems.
  • Meet face to face with individuals and identified support persons in person and/or by phone at a frequency and format requested and agreed upon by the individual. Ideally, at least once a week.
  • Develop individualized plans with patients and monitor those wellness plans during meetings as identified above.
  • Provide information to treatment team to inform treatment decision making.
  • Link patients to available resources, including continuing education/professional development, safe housing, recovery supports, self‑help groups, substance abuse and mental health services, sobriety meetings, and medical/health facilities.
  • Serve as a liaison to the patient's formal and informal supports, including but not limited to: their referral source, family members, client sponsors, treatment providers, and other supporters.
  • Maintain working relationships with ED and CHH staff and other agencies or institutions in order to provide awareness of recovery as a reality and the availability of recovery coaching.
  • Receive ongoing supervision and training in order to provide recovery coaching services to the highest degree and the benefit of the community and individuals served.
  • Assist patients in crisis situations involving social, emotional, health, and other problems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift, push or pull 10-15 pounds.
Working Environment
  • Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing. Able to tolerate working with and around noxious odors.
  • May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental and patient needs. May be required to travel between facilities/buildings. Work may be performed in acute hospital setting.
  • May be exposed to virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens in working environment. May be exposed to traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries and death.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of treatment resources including a working knowledge of the 12-Step Fellowships.
  • Ability to comply with WVU Medicine, WVU Research Corporation, UHA, and Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry safety procedures.
