Protection Engineer - Senior Technical Director
WSP is currently searching for a Protection Engineer – Senior Technical Director for our Clarkston, WA office. You will be involved in projects with our SCADA and Analytical Services Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
Opportunity
Provide regional and/or multi‑sector leadership to ensure electrical engineering subject matter, technical deliverables, infrastructure projects and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Responsible for SME innovation and administration, ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal engineering, construction, and safety regulations, and providing strategic and consistent direction to address current and future challenges in a large‑scale and multi‑faceted business organization.
Impact
- Assigned projects will include electrical studies for utility, industrial/commercial, and IPP clients. Systems to be analyzed will include conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, and transmission and distribution systems.
- Technical skills/knowledge include the following:
- Short circuit and symmetrical component analysis
- Protection system coordination
- Wide area coordination analysis
- Protection scheme and settings criteria development
- Relay settings file development
- NERC compliance
- Protection hardware in the loop testing
- Event analysis
- Bus, Transmission Line, Motor, Generator, Transformer, Distribution, Capacitor, and Reactor protection
- Advanced system protection including series compensated lines, single pole tripping, and impacts of I on protection systems
- Advanced software application:
AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, ASPEN Oneliner, CAPE, SKM‑PTW, ETAP, RSCAD/RTDS, PSCAD, ATP, EMTP‑RV, MathCAD, AcSELerator Architect, PCM 600, Digsi.
- Successful candidates must be willing to travel on occasion and work successfully in a customer focused, project oriented environment.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 15+ years of relevant post education experience in electrical engineering and infrastructure design for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
- Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).
- Advanced knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.
- Demonstrated ability with establishing, implementing, and managing multiple larger‑scale discipline‑related programs, documents, projects, and practices for a line(s) of business.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to manage staff, and effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Strategic lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
- Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, and company‑wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exits.
- Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency with office automation, discipline‑specific design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, WIN IGS, Inventor, AutoCAD electrical), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools used in the corporate environment.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
