Overview
Job Title:
Registered Sleep Technologist or Polysomnographer (RPSGT) - PRN at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
Reports to:
Respiratory Director
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Sleep Center Coordinator, provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in-center and HSAT testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education.
- Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).
- Determine final testing parameters/procedures with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
- Review patient medical history and verify the medical order.
- Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study; verify patient identification, collect documents, and obtain consent for the study.
- Explain procedures to the patient and orient the patient for either in-center or home sleep apnea testing.
- Select equipment and calibrate for testing to ensure proper functioning; make adjustments as necessary.
- Perform patient setup: attach electrodes and sensors according to accepted standards.
- Perform routine PAP interface fitting and desensitization.
- Follow procedural protocols (Polysomnography, MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc.) to ensure collection of appropriate data.
- Perform physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments as needed.
- Follow “lights out” procedures to establish baseline values and document them (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
- Acquire data while monitoring study-tracing quality; identify, correct, and document artifacts.
- Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
- Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic needs (e.g., PAP, oxygen administration).
- Follow “lights on” procedures to verify data integrity and complete data collection (e.g., retest calibrations and instruct patient on questionnaires).
- Score sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines.
- Score clinical events (respiratory, cardiac, limb movements, arousals) using AASM standards.
- Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
- Provide age-specific care knowledge for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download; provide patient education for home sleep apnea testing.
- Adhere to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.
- Comply with AASM Scoring Manual parameters for HSAT; identify artifacts, inadequate signals, and study failures and generate accurate reports.
- Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
- Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
- Maintain good working relationships with Sleep Center staff and other departments; treat patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations.
- Respond to sleep patients’ procedural inquiries with appropriate information; provide patient education using sleep center protocols.
- Assist the coordinator in all aspects of sleep center operations; adhere to sleep center quality assurance policies.
- Evaluate sleep study-related equipment and inventory; review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Demonstrates appropriate social and customer service skills; complies with professional standards of conduct.
