Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Demonstrates initiative, flexibility and responsibility with minimal supervision. Triage patients safely, rapidly, and accurately; prioritize care based on physical and psychosocial needs; communicate with physicians regarding changes in patient status, symptoms, and diagnostic results; respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or treatment.
Competencies- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with specialists and adjusts nursing care processes to ensure optimal care.
- Uses triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care; accurately assigns triage categories.
- Monitors hemodynamic status and accurately interprets results.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats appropriately.
- Prepares, initiates, monitors, and discontinues IV fluids.
- Maintains accurate nursing documentation of histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
- Assesses and reassesses pain; employs appropriate pain management techniques; educates patient and family regarding pain management.
- Revises plan of care based on patient response and evaluates overall effectiveness daily.
- Performs patient care duties considering age-specific standards of care.
- Possesses knowledge of medications and proper administration based on age and clinical condition.
- Follows the seven medication rights to reduce errors.
- Forms teaching plans based on learning needs and evaluates effectiveness; includes family as appropriate.
- Assists physicians with procedures and provides services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Performs treatments and provides services to the level required by licensure.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs; serves as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other providers.
- Interacts professionally with patients/families and involves them in care planning.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan; provides age-appropriate care.
- Performs all aspects of care in a safety‑optimized environment, reducing medical errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Consults other departments for an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Communicates clearly with Nurse Manager, coworkers and physicians.
- Maintains strong working relationships within and across departments.
- Coordinates psychosocial needs with Social Services/Discharge Planning.
- Shows flexibility, organization and ability to function under stress.
- Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including federal, state, local, and accrediting standards.
- Ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and completes tasks within scheduled time.
- Wears identification and uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Participates in in‑services and responds in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual reviews and department in‑services as scheduled.
- Participates in 12 staff meetings annually or reviews monthly minutes.
- Represents the organization positively and professionally.
- Engages in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Complies with all organizational ethical business policies.
- Communicates mission, ethics and goals of the hospital and department focus statement.
Current ACLS Certification prior to completion of department orientation. Current TNCC Certification within one year of hire. Current PALS Certification within one year of hire.
Regulatory Requirements- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current state Registered Nurse licensure within state of practice.
- Current BLS certification.
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Mobility, sight, hearing, verbal communication; changes in temperature; exposure to disagreeable elements; exposure to biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; frequent standing and walking; lift up to 100 pounds; carry up to 40 pounds; push/pull up to 450 pounds.
